lIRWIN was platted on June 6, 1881, on the banks of the Nishnabotna River. It was an important station on the Kirkman (southwest) branch of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, and was named after E. W. Irwin, whose family were among the first people who settled in the northeastern part of the county. The place was first known as Tibbettsville, in honor of William Tibbetts, when a post-office was established there in 1879.

Yes Police Protection Shelby County Sheriff’s Department Schools Irwin/Kirkman/Manilla (IKM)-Manning Community Schools (K-12) The Irwin‑Kirkman‑Manilla School System - is comprised of two campuses. Manilla, eight miles to the north, houses the early childhood center and grades 9‑12, while Irwin has the preschool attendance center and grades 2‑8. The school system regularly sends students to state competitions in band, speech, track, football, basketball, wrestling, and softball. There are active booster organizations for both music and athletics.

Aberdeen Angus Hall of Famer
Earl Marshall was one of the all-time great bulls of the breed, born on September 4, 1912, on the W.A. McHenry Farm in Denison, IA. Susequently, McHenry sold his herd to Earl Ryan (of Irwin) and Charles Escher, Jr. (of Botna) in 1916. Earl Marshall's son, Blackcap Revolution, traveled as an International Grand Champ spreading the pedigree. At the present time, the American Angus Association, since its origin in 1883, has registered 16,832,114 animals in the herd book, 15,040,919 have Earl Marshall in their pedigree. Over the last ten years, 3,072,429 have been registered and all but 964 have Earl Marshall in their pedigree. Earl Marshall spent most of his life in Shelby County and died July 2, 1928. The Board of Directors of the American Angus Association established in 1983 the Angus Heritage Foundation. Held annually in mid-September featuring two days of working agricultural exhibits, old-time music, flea market, and food. Hunting Hunters come from all over the U. S. to hunt pheasant and deer.

Features picnic facilities with shelter house, sand volleyball court, ball field, playground, and concession stand. Irwin Community Building Used regularly for meetings, auctions, receptions, and other community events. The facility annually hosts over 100 events. |
